Students okay higher grading standards

STUDENTS are not mad about this new grading system.

            Instead, like how Accountancy student Ramon Hizon finds it, it’s rather “harsh,” but would be the only way to enjoin students to do their responsibilities and study harder.

            College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Dean Carmela Dizon said students need to exert more effort in their studies. Dizon said, the purpose of this change is to encourage students to study harder and persevere more in their academic standing, and to raise the academic standards of the university.

            Hizon agreed and said that “[the change on the grading system is] a great move for the betterment of educational quality in AUF.”

            Meanwhile, Electronics and Communication Engineering student Paolo Infante finds the change I the grading scheme “okay,” but only at first. Infante said he realized that the increase in the passing rate was a big thing when their preliminary grades were issued to them.

            Infante said there’s a “big possibility” for the scholars to lose their scholarships because they’re having a hard time reaching the new rate. Infante however accepted the change saying all they need is to exert more effort. But he remained with his earlier statement though when he said he’s sure that “hindi magiging madali ‘yon.”

           

            “Panibagong adjustment nanaman ‘to,” Infante ended.

           

            On the other hand, Dizon said, “kung hasa talaga sila, when they graduate they can face almost anything.”

            Dizon explained the change on the grading system was decided upon during the meeting of the academic council which is comprised of the deans of the different colleges, and the Vice President for Academic Affairs Archimedes David.

            “Napag-usapan ‘yan from top management tapos nag-cascade sa mga different offices,” according to Dizon.

            David said this is part of realizing the mission, vision, and goals of the university.

            “If you are going to visit the quality policy of the university, it calls for the continual improvement of programs, structure, and education system,” said the vice president.

            The idea of changing the grading scheme started during last year’s second semester. The new scheme is now effective this academic year and recognizes 60%, 65%, and 75% passing rates for general education, professional, and board subjects, respectively.

Crim alumnus puts AUF back on the line-up

ANOTHER Angeles University Foundation (AUF) alumnus has once again raised the rank of AUF in Criminal Justice Education after landing on the third spot at the 2011 Criminology Licensure Examination.

Out of 7,789 passers, AUF Criminology Batch 2011 alumnus Resty Astrero ranked 3^rd in the licensure exam with an average of 90%.

According to Astrero, he prepared by reviewing his notes and “relentlessly” answering questionnaires, aside from attending the reviews that were scheduled every Saturdays and Sundays from July to September.

Astrero said the test questions ranged from “easy to insanely hard,” and the lessons that were taught in school actually appeared in the exam. But “it all boils down on how one took his four years of academic training seriously.”

Astrero meanwhile admitted that he was “not that confident” of landing in the Top 10. He only rated himself as “good enough” to place in the Top 11-20 before the results were released.

“I’ve shared these doubts after the exams not only to my schoolmates but to my teachers as well. They were ore confident of me than I am of myself,” Astrero said.

According to Astrero, he “prayed a lot” and used the motto “Victoria amat Curam” as a motivation to strive harder in his review.

Victoria amat Curam is a Latin phrase that means “victory belongs to those who take pains, and victory belongs to those who prepare.”

Astrero has been one of the top performing students in the College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) during his college years. He was the first President of the Paragon Society and the over-all President of the Criminology Society.

Currently, Astrero is planning to take up his master’s degree this coming academic year in preparation for his goal of joining the academe someday.

Meanwhile, aside from Astrero, 36 from his batch passed in the recently held exam. AUF also gained an over-all passing rate of 82.61%, the highest in Central Luzon, versus the national passing rate of 43%.

Astrero and his colleagues took their oath as licensed criminologists at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City on December 21. They were accompanied by CCJE Dean Lucia Hipolito.

Second Day...

Kahit na alam kong wala ako sa mood para magsulat ng medyo matinong blogpost, ayoko pa ring palampasin ang araw na ito na wala akong maisusulat na kahit ano. Astig kasi ng mga pangyayari today. Funny, Scary, Nakakainis, Nakaka walang-gana, at Nakaka-inspire. Okay, so eto na, sisimulan ko na ha? Pagpasenyahan mo na lang, medyo magulo nyan. Hehehe.

Okay. So for today, ang first class namin ay 7 o'clock in the morning. Mas na-enjoy at mas may nangyari naman today compared sa 1st day namin kahapon. So anu-ano nga ba ang ilan sa mga nangyari sa araw na 'to?

First class namin ang Philippine Constitution. Though medyo kinakabahan ako sa prof namin dahil isa syang Attorney, okay naman at nag-enjoy ako ng sobra. Feeling ko nga isa ang subject na 'to sa mga ma-eenjoy ko this sem. Nakakatuwa kasi funny ang prof, pero medyo scary nga lang. Kinabahan ako nung mahuli yung dalawang friends ko na nag-uusap at ayun, napagdiskitahan/nahuli nya. Pero gayunpaman, ayos pa rin. Kahit medyo scary yung ginawa nyang pagpin-point sa friend ko na katabi ko that time, hindi pa rin nun nabago ang excitement ko na mag-aral at maging student nya :)

Second subject ang walang kamatayang NSTP. Walang class dun, kasi walang teacher. Hanggang ngayon, hindi pa rin ako mapanatag sa kakaisip kung sino ang magiging prof namin dun para sa sem na 'to. Si Ma'am C kaya ulit? Hmmmm. Ok lang siguro kung sya, pero sana wag naman para maiba. Sana, kung sino man ang magiging prof namin sa NSTP ngayon, wag naman sanang pa-major. Rugo, maawa naman sila sa amin, MAKISAMA naman po sana kayo... Pag minor, wag pa-major, please! =)

3rd subject ay yung Rizal's Life, Works, and Writings. Thank God, yung dati naming adviser noong 1st year ang prof namin ngayon :) Ang sweet pa nya nung inamin nya samin na kami daw ang favorite nya. Hahaha. Honestly, isa sya sa mga teachers sa AUF na idol na idol ko. Kahit medyo mahirap sa class nya noong 1st year kami, sulit naman kasi marami kaming natutunan.

Malamang, ang masaklap na parte lang noong mga oras na nagkaklase kami sa Rizal ay yung pagbibigay ng groupings. Akalain mong of all people, yung nag-iisang tao pa na hinihiling kong 'wag ko sanang maka-grupo, eh sya pang naka-group ko! Funny na nakakainis, pero wala akong magagawa kundi kalimutan yun at mag move on. Wala akong magagawa, for sure marami pang mga pagkakataon na makakasama ko ang taong iyon (na itago natin sa pangalang KAMIAS MAKAHIYA) sa mga group works, activities, atbp. Haaaay...

Last subject naman ay Radio, Scriptwrting, and Directing. Scary din yung subject na yun kasi for sure, super iba nyan. Hindi na kagaya dati na kapag gumagawa kami ng outputs, medyo pwede pang pa-easy easy. Pero I believe, kakayanin 'to! :) Basta think positive!

Akala ko, magiging okay na ang buong araw ko. Uwian na sana at mag-re-radio program na ako eh. Kaya lamang, MAY NAGTEXT nanaman! hahaha. Panira ng moment eh. Naisip ko tuloy, mabuti sigurong wag ko nalang basahin ang text message nun, erase na lang kaagad ( Ako na po ang MEAN >< ). Promise, mula bukas, hindi na ako papa-apekto. LOL.

Matapos mawala sa mood dahil sa isang unwanted text mula sa isang kaibigan, nagdecide akong wag ulit mag-attend ng radio program sa araw na 'to. Napakasama ko, iniwan ko ang partner ko ng nagiisa. Diretso ako kaagad sa Newborn Screening Center sa tabi ng University Hostel para magpa-set ng interview sa Director ng Administrative Services. Doon kasi ako pinapunta nung receptionist sa AUFMC. Pagdating ko doon sa NBS Center, naghintay ako ng mga 30 minutes bago may lumabas na tao saka sinabi sa akin na hindi daw doon iiwan ang letter, doon daw sa Executive Offices sa may hospital. Bongga! Sa madaling salita, nagpunta ako sa AUFMC. Unfortunately, wala raw ang Director. Balikan ko na lang daw yung letter sa Monday :((

Sa kabuuan, yan ang ilan lamang sa mga naganap sa araw na 'to. Again, may isang blogpost nanaman ako na categorized as non-sense. Goodnight! :)

Inkblots 2010 :)

INKBLOTS 2010. @ the University of Sto. Thomas (UST)

Last October 18-20, The Angelenean Pioneer participated in the annual Inkblots spearheaded by The Varsitarian, the official student publication of the University of Sto. Thomas. This National Seminar-Workshop is now on its 12th year, and this is my first time to join this one.


As early as 5 am in the morning, the Angelenean Pioneer delegates: Ate Cherry Mungcal, Kuya Ryan Marimla, Ate Margaret Maño, Ate Marjorie Maño, Josh Esteban, Xanti Gonzalez and I, met in front of the main campus of AUF and immediately went to UST for us to reach the place early for registration. While we're on our way to the place, we stopped at McDonalds to order and take-out our breakfast.

If i'm not mistaken, we reached the place 15 mins. before 7 am. We checked in at Fersal hotel, stayed there for awhile, and went to UST for registration.

For the first day, we had News writing, Feature writing, and Photojournalism lectures. I enjoyed the News writing session by Mr. Christian Esguerra, a political reporter of the Philippine Daily Inquirer covering the senate. I also enjoyed the Photojournalism lecture by Mr. Ernie Sarmiento, chief photographer of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, because he appeared to talk in a natural but humorous way.

For the second day, we arrived late for the 1st lecture which was Investigative Journalism by Mr. Jun Veneracion. With that, we had to sit on monoblock chairs because all seats were already taken. I liked the documentary film which was shown that morning. It's about the struggle of the Philippine Military in battling with the separatist groups here in the Philippines. With that documentary film, I realized how hard it is to be a journalist. It was clearly emphasized during Mr. Veneracion's talk that; "No story is worth dying for." If you're a journalist or a media practitioner, never ever dare to risk your life just for the sake of getting a scoop for the public. Above all, your life is more important than your job.

Cesar Apolinario, a reporter of GMA 7, talked about Reporting on the Web. The highlight of his talk was more on the use of Social Networking sites in disseminating information to the public.

After lunch, we had our Parallel Sessions. Ate Cherry, Ate Marjorie, Ate Margaret, Xanti and I chose the Editorial Cartooning session with Mr. Manix Abrera, a cartoonist of the Philippine Daily Inquirer. He was really funny! I really enjoyed the whole session. His funny yet informative comic strips promoted Philippine culture and traditions that a reader won't forget. Before he started his talk, he told everyone that when we finished the whole lecture, everyone will be able to draw even just a simple cartoon. Yes, I know how to draw one ;)

The last day was spent for sessions on Opinion/Editorial Writing (Mr. Vim Nadera), Campus Paper Management (Mr. Felipe Salvosa), and Filipino Writing (Mr. Eros Atalia). Editorial writing and Filipino writing were both fun and informative. I enjoyed Mr. Atalia's discussion about Writing for the Tabloid. He instilled in the minds of the student-participants and even advisers that time, that if we really want to change the future of tabloid, we should penetrate the industry and we, the young journalists of today, should initiate the change that we want to see in the tabloid newspaper.

AUF offers Australian accredited acad programs

I've been a student journalist since elementary, but I must say that being a part of our university paper now that I am in college is a big thing and a brand new experience for me. It's challenging to be a part of The Angelenean Pioneer, not only because it's different now compared to highschool and elementary school papers but also because in college, most of the time, you have real editors and a lot of real readers... 

Being a newswriter when I was in highschool gave me a lot of experiences when it comes to competing with other newswriters around Angeles City and even around Region III. When I was taking the qualifying exam for Pioneer last school year, I chose to apply as a News Correspondent because this is what I want and this is what I'm used to. I took the exam without expecting that I'll pass. Nagbabakasakali lang kung baga.

Fortunately, I passed and I was very thankful. I know back then, that this will be a start of something new, something challenging for a sophomore and a novice like me.

With that, here is my first news article published in our paper, The Angelenean Pioneer (The Official Student Publication of Angeles University Foundation Vol. XL No. 1 June-July 2010)

AUF offers Australian accredited acad programs

AUF can finally deliver two Australian government accredited courses throughout the region as it has received its license to operate such.

AUF in partnership with the Australian Trade Training College (ATTC) offers two new academic programs: Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management/ Certificate III in Hospitality (Commercial Cookery) and Bachelor of Science in Information Technology/Diploma of Information Technology. These two mentioned programs will be offered this second semester.

College of Computer Studies (CCS) Dean Lilibeth Timbol-Cuison said we are lucky that the Diploma of Information Technology is included in the offshore program of ATTC. This program will be embedded in the curriculum of BSIT students next semester. Furthermore, modular programs are offered to non-IT students who are interested to earn the diploma.

In the modular program, learning may exceed beyond the four corners of the classroom as students who are enrolled in the program may access their activities and lessons online. There will be scheduled dates wherein students are tasked to submit their requirements until they finish the total duration of the course.

Students who will be able to complete these highly innovative programs will graduate with the skills and knowledge enabling them to pursue a role in the IT industry. These students will have an internationally accredited and recognized qualification upon graduation.

The Trans-national agreements were developed with different partnering universities and colleges in the Philippines including AUF. The said partnership materialized through the joint efforts of ATTC and Global Skills Group (GSG) with the university.

Gabing-gabi na, pero heto ako. Naka-upo sa harap ng kompyuter at nagpupuyat. Kasabay ng pangangalay ng binti at panaka-nakang pagbagsak ng mga mata ko, ewan ko kung bakit hindi ako makahanap ng sapat na dahilan para matulog :))

Habang pa-facebook facebook ang Lola moh, nakita ko ang mga notes na naisulat ko sa site na iyon. Hayaan ninyong i-share ko dito ang ilan sa mga 'yun.

A while ago, I found myself asking the question; “Sino ba talaga ako?” Funny kasi masyado ata ako nagiging OA. Hindi ko mawari kung ito ba'y dulot ng pagkabangag ko mula sa pagkain ng oatmeal na inihanda para sakin ng nanay ko, o bungang isip lng 'to dhil sa sunud-sunod na mga araw na nagpupuyat ako. Anyway, sanay nman na akong umaga na kung matulog. As my friend labeled me, isa daw akong “Vampire” (Now i'm thinking of the Cullens na, haha ayan tuloy). :))

Going back to the question, napag-isip isip ko kung gaano nga ba ako kakilala ng mga kaibigan ko? Ng mga taong nakakakita sakin diyan sa tabi-tabi? Ng mga kakilala ko sa facebook? Ng mga schoolmates ko sa AUF at ng mga former schoolmates ko sa FGNMHS? I dunno. That's why I've decided to write something about me; highlights of what happened in my life 17 years back.


ANGELINE PEREZ ROGEL

Yeah, that's my full name. Happy nman ako sa pangalang ibinigay sakin ng mga magulang ko kasi hindi siya gaanong mahaba. Salamat at one word lang ang first name ko dahil ako yung tipo ng taong tamad magsulat ng mahabang pangalan lalo na kung my quiz sa klase. Madalas ma mis-prononounce ang last name ko. Sanay na akong nagkokorek sa mga teacher ko like; “Hindi po ganun, pronounced as letter H po dpat ung G.” 17 years old na ako. Special day ko ang February 22, kasi B-day ko yun. Tatay ko? Severino Rogel. Nanay ko? Aurora P. Rogel. Mga Kuya ko? Anghel. Joke. Haha. Actually, dalawa sila, si Benjie at c Brian. :) (parang hindi kuya noh? Hahaha).

I love my father. SO MUCH. “Papa” ang twag ku sknya, sa loob o labas man ng bahay. Sayang ndi nila ako sinanay na tawagin syang 'Daddy' pra nmn medyo sosyal =)) The best thing about him is that sobrang bait nya. Occasional drinker, hindi smoker, at lalong hindi nagger. Well, sa kanya ako mdalas kumukuha ng allowance at load. Hindi siya palatanong kung saan gagamitin ang pera o kung saan ko yun ginasta kapag naubos na. For him, pag binigay na, sayo na. Wala nang pakialamanan. Never ko pa siyang narinig kumanta. As in kahit konti lang, wala talaga. Pinapakanta ko sya noon pero ang sabi niya, tatalon daw mga butiki samin kaya hindi ko na siya pinilit mula nun. Currently, he's working as a Secretary of the former Secretary of Department of Public Works and Highways. Also, siya ay isang retired Police Captain ng Philippine National Police.

Kung meron mang isang tao sa buong mundo na nakakakilala sa buong pagkatao ko, wala yung iba kundi ang Mama ko. Hmm. Medyo palasermon sya (which is, I believe, normal na sa mga nanay). In spite of that, mabait at caring naman siya sa amin. Alam na alam niya kung ano ang ugali ko, and ganun din naman ako sa kanya. Mas close ako sa mama ko kesa sa papa ko, kasi palaging nasa work si papa. Matapang si mama. Obvious nman eh, haha. Saka halos lahat na ata ng mga kaibigan ko ganun ang pagkakakilala sa kanya. Siya ang nakakaalam ng mood ko. Kung kelan ako masaya at kung kelan ako sabog. Hindi sila strict ni papa, as in. Im free to do everything I want as long as nagpapaalam ako sa kanila. Saya nuh? Haha.

Yung dalawa kong Kuya, ayun. Parehong pulis. Yung panganay, sweet. Sa sobrang sweet eh nakakalimutan na nya atang 17 years old na ako at hindi 7. Yung pangalawa, sweet din nman pero medyo moody paminsan-minsan. Pareho silang makulit. Si kuya benjie, talented sa pagluluto. Sabi ko nga sa kanya, pwede na rin siyang mag-resign sa pagka-pulis at mag-chef na lang siya. Yung pangalawa naman, madalas kong kaagaw sa computer. Kaagaw sa ym, kaagaw sa facebook. Noon, madalas kaming mag-away-away ng mga 'to, mabuti naman ngayon at hindi na. Hahaha.


UGALI KO :)

Moody ako. Masungit minsan, pero minsan lang yun :) Okay naman siguro akong kaibigan kasi hindi naman ako nananakit (physically and emotionally, as far as I know, LOL). Paminsan-minsan sinusumpong ako ng pagiging matulungin ko sa kapwa. Hindi ko alam kung papano pero alam ko nangyayari yun. Sweet ako sa mga taong malalapit sa akin. Mahirap kasi maging sweet sa mga taong hindi pa naman talaga malapit sakin kasi baka isipin ng iba feeling close ako, 'di ba? Hindi ako yung tipo ng taong palangiti at mahilig mamansin pag nakasalubong mo sa daan o sa school corridors. PERO kahit ganun, kilala kita at hindi ako snobbish. Nahihiya lang talaga akong maunang ngumiti sayo kasi baka isipin mo isa akong feeler. Hahaha.

Gusto ko sa mga taong pala-kaibigan. Magaan ang loob ko sa kanila. Ayoko sa mga taong masyadong madaldal at hindi ako binibigyan ng chance na makapagsalita. Though paminsan-minsan okay ung mga taong ganun (kasi sila ang nagdadala ng conversation at hindi ako). Mahilig akong mag-share ng secrets sa mga kaibigan ko, bagay na hindi ko nagagawa sa sinumang family member sa bahay. Oo, marami akong kaibigan pero sa dami nila, hindi lahat eh napagsasabihan ko ng mga sikreto at nangyayari sa buhay ko. Meron lang cgurong 7 or 8 sa kanila na updated tungkol sa akin.

Hmmm. Mahilig akong magtago ng mga bagay na may sentimental value sakin gaya ng mga notebooks ko simula nung prep hanggang highschool. Wala akong alam na pwedeng paggamitan at hindi ako ang nakikinabang sa mga yun kundi mga insektong namumuhay kasama ng mga ito. Ayoko naman silang itapon, kasi once in a while binabalikan ko yun at tinitingnan ko kung paano nag-evolved ang sulat ko mula sa pagiging kalkal manok hanggang sa medyo ayos na handwriting. Natatawa na nga lang ako minsan kapag nakikita ko ang mga kalokohang naisulat ko noon sa likod ng mga notebooks ko. May FLAMES, may SOS, at kung anu-ano pa.

Mahilig akong magbasa-basa at manood ng mga documentaries. Marami akong libro sa bahay pero madalas, puro reference books lang. Hindi ko alam bakit pero mas hilig kong magbasa ng mga reference books kaysa mga fiction. Iilan pa lang ang mga nabasa kong fiction books at madalas tumatagal bago ko matapos ang isang libro.Mula sa kinauupuan ko ngayon, kitang-kita ko kung gaano nasapawan ng mga librong world history and literature, philippine history at biology ang mga fiction books na meron ako.


SCHOOL is COOL =]]

Unang-unang school na pinasukan ko eh yung City Temple Kiddie Learning Center malapit sa bahay namin. Dun ako unang nagkaroon ng mga kaibigan at kaaway syempre. Hinding-hindi ko makakalimutan si FIVE-STAR na wala atang ginawa sa class namin kundi ipagyabang yung five star na binigay sa kanya ng tita nya na teacher namin. Inggit na inggit ako sa kanya nun. Parang lahat na ata ng biyaya nakukuha niya. Hahaha. Tinandaan ko ang mukha niya pati yung nunal nya malapit sa bibig at sinabi ko sa sarili ko mula noon na darating din yung time na magkikita kami ulit ng batang ito at sa akin naman siya maiinggit. Hahaha. (Ako na po ang mean. xD)

Graduate ako ng Gueco Balibago Elementary School. Ang makasaysayang school na may mga umaalingasaw na CR at unique na ghost stories. Sabi ng mga kaklase ko noong elementary, meron daw nitso sa likod ng covered court namin nun, binabalik-balikan namin yun pero wala naman kaming matagpuang bakas kundi ang amoy panghi na ihi ng mga estudyante na nagkaka-klase malapit sa covered court na yun. Remarkable din yung statue ni Jose Rizal na umiikot daw ang ulo kapag may batang dumadaan dun ng mag-isa. May mga sabi-sabi rin na sa room na malapit sa statue ni Rizal, may mga fetus na nakadisplay para sa mga estudyante pero nakagraduate na ako't lahat e ndi ko man lang nasilayan ang mga yun.

Sa maalikabok na paaralan naman ng Francisco G. Nepomuceno Memorial High School ako nagtapos ng sekondarya. Ayoko sanang maniwala na highschool life ang the best pero sa tuwing naiisip ko ang mga napagdaanan ko habang nag-aaral ako sa school na 'to eh gusto kong isigaw na the best tlaga ang buhay high school. Doon ko naranasang maging part ng Science-Math Class at doon ko rin naranasan ang hirap ng pagkakaroon ng mga elective subjects. Ilan sa mga bagay na namimiss ko sa highschool e yung pagkakaroon ng mga Regional seminars sa malalayong lugar. Sobrang saya kapag na-eexcuse ka sa klase sa loob ng tatlo o limang araw para mag-represent ng school nyo! Haha. Dito rin ako nakasali at nakaranas manalo sa mga competitions gaya ng Science Investigatory Project, Division Schools Press Conference at Regional Schools Press Conference. Newswriting ang category ko nun. Naranasan ko ring maging Editor-In-Chief at maging President ng Interact Club, atbp. Nakapag-audition din ako at natanggap sa isang Exchange Student sa Japan. Naging isa sa mga Ten Outstanding Secondary Students of Angeles City (TOSSA) 2009. Pag naaalala ko yung mga hirap at pagod, nakakamiss din pala. Yung pressures at yung memories minsan parang gusto kong balikan. Yun nga lang, past is past. Atleast naman, my memories na naiwan sakin na pwede kong i-cherish hangga't kaya pa ng memory ko :)

At ngayon, heto ako, mag-aaral ng Angeles University Foundation at AB Communication ang course. Honestly, Nursing ang first choice ko. Yun talaga ang sinulat ko sa registration form ko bago magenroll. Kaya lang, nung malapit nang magpasukan, naisip ko na ayaw ko ng DUGO at MATH. So naisip ko, bakit hindi Maskom? Hilig ko rin naman sumulat at magsalita kahit papaano. Sabi nila, maskom is maskomportable sa bahay. Pero gnun nga ba? Kung tutuusin, exact opposite nya ang ang term na 'maskomportable'. Nakakainis lang pag naririnig mong binabansagan ng ganun ang course mo, where in reality, wala naman talagang course na madali. Lahat nangangailangan ng hardwork at effort para makatapos ka. Isa ring bagay na ayaw kong iniuugnay sa course na 'to is yung pag maskom ka, maingay ka, madaldal. Cguro, yung ibang maskom students, Oo. Pero hindi naman lahat. Actually, hindi basta daldal ang kailangan. Dapat may sense din pag nagsasalita. Kaming mga AB Comm students, nabubuhay sa ideology na; “We don't just talk to make noise, we talk with sense” :)

National Seminar-Workshop on Campus Journalism

Okaay :) I know this is a bit late but allow me to write something about our four-day seminar in Baguio City last September 29-October 2, 2010...

This is a seminar about the role of school governance in being a catalyst for a social change. This was sponsored by the Association of Educators for Interrelated Research and Studies, Inc. (AEIRS) and just like most seminars being conducted in Baguio City, we have to stay at Teacher's Camp, but the whole Pioneer team (especially the big three) -- Ate Mits Santos, Daddy Ryan Marimla, Ate Peps Lopez, Josh Esteban, Xanti Gonzalez, and I--decided to check in at Benguet Prime Hotel.

Upon reaching Teacher's Camp for registration, we were told that the seminar-workshop proper will start on the 3rd day and that the first two days will be spent for city tour, etc. (Masyado kami napa-aga) :)

It was around 7:30 pm (I think?) when we reached the hotel and later on, we decided to search for a place to eat. Thanks to Ariane Magante for suggesting 50's Diner :) 

1st Destination: 50's Diner

What I learned: Huwag magpapadala sa ganda ng pangalan.Natakam naman kasi ako sa mga nakasulat sa menu nila! haha :)) I didn't expect that they will serve a chicken sandwich and a huge burger like that. I mean, yes, masarap ang food, pero soooobraaang laki! scary! XD Anyway, sulit naman. I miss 50's tuloy! :)

Because were super full that night dahil sa masarap at fully-loaded na dinner namin sa 50's, we decided not to sleep muna. Lumabas muna kami ng hotel and we checked some ukay-ukay stalls sa Session Road. Ang lamig sa labas! Sana ganun na lang kalamig sa Angeles City :)

DAY 1

September 30

Thank God, I don't have any problems sa pagtulog. Kahit na medyo uncomfortable dahil wala ako sa sarili kong bahay, okay naman ang naging 1st night ko sa hotel :) Luckily, may 3 free food stubs from the hotel for that day. Atleast we don't need to go out and look for a place where we can eat. Josh, Xanti, and I went to the cafe and dun kami nag-breakfast :)

Since this day is for us to tour the city, kung saan-saan kami napadpad. With these two, kulang nalang ata ikutin namin ang buong city. haha. Napaka-energetic nila at parang walang kapaguran :))

3rd Destination: SM City Baguio

It's my second time to visit SM Baguio :) I realized that it's bigger than SM Clark here in Angeles City. Napansin ko lang, sa 4 days na magkakasama kami, parang kain ata kami ng kain?! hahaha =) Nakaramdam nanaman kami ng gutom so we decided to look for a place to eat lunch.

4th Destination: Burnham Park

Napagbigyan din ang wish ko! :) Ang magboating sa Burnham Park. Salamat nga pala sa dalawa kong kasama sa boat na wala masyadong ginawa para takutin ako. I have no idea kung gaano kalalim ang water doon. I don't care, hindi ako marunong lumangoy. At ipinagyabang pa nila sa akin na marunong daw silang mag-backstroke at threading dahil may swimming class sila, huh? Thank you!

3rd destination: Starbucks

7-Eleven's Vanilla Coffee :)

So, the real plan was to buy coffee @ 7-Eleven. Nagyaya ako lumabas since malapit lang naman ang 7-Eleven from the hotel where we stayed. As usual, sobrang lamig sa labas! :) After going back to the hotel, dun muna kami sa lobby nag-stay. It was 10:30 pm when we decided to go to SM Baguio and mag-frappe sa Starbucks. Again, the real plan was to stay there for only 30 minutes, pero dahil napasarap ang kwentuhan, umabot ata kami hanggang 11:30 pm?

Etong isa naming kasama na si Xanti, sukat ba namang maiwan ang cellphone sa Starbucks?!? LOL. Salamat sa cellphone ko at meron siyang extra-load na pangtawag. We dialled his number and a woman answered; naiwan daw yung cellphone sa may Starbucks. :)) What a relief for Xanti. Akala nya tuluyan nang nawala ang cellphone nya, haha.

October 1

Unfortunately, we weren't able to occupy a good seat for today's seminar-workshop. When we arrived, the speaker--Gina O. Gonong, Ph.D.--was already discussing something about school paper problems. I was a bit overwhelmed by the number of participants for the seminar. Though I know that this one is a national conference, I still didn't expect the audience to be that large. Unfortunately, some of us remained standing until lunch break. Since Ate Mits and Kuya Ryan already attended last year's conference, they already have the idea of what was being discussed by the speaker then. After lunch, we decided to leave and again, tour the city ;)

4th Destination: Botanical Garden

Walking seriously. Grabee. Yan ba ang dapat lakarin
 bago makarating sa Botanical Garden?! while walking, Dad asked me;
"Anak, umamin ka, pangarap mo ba ang makarating sa Botanical Garden?"
LOL

We decided not to attend the second part of the seminar which is the workshop. Next stop is Botanical Garden. Can you imagine na nilakad namin ang papunta doon? Paano ba naman kasi, bawat pagtanungan namin sa daan, ang sabi diretso lang daw ang lakad papunta sa Botanical Garden. Lakad lang kami ng lakad until we noticed na ang layo na pala ng nalalakad namin! :)) Finally, we reached the place.

That time, I was wondering why wala yatang masyadong tao sa place. Is it because it's raining? :)) Hindi kami nagpatalo sa papatak-patak na ulan. 'Di kami sumuko until we reached the place haha. We went to the souvenir stalls there, at meron akong isang bagay na gustung-gustong bilhin that time. Unfortunately, 'di ko nabili kasi sobrang mahal at sobrang laki! :))

5th Destination: The Mansion

Wish ni Josh na dumaan daw kami sa future rest house nya, the Mansion. Ayun, pinagbigyan.   While we're inside the taxi on our way to Minesview Park, we asked Kuya driver if we can stop in front of the Mansion. Pumayag naman siya :) 3 php nga lang for 3 minutes.

 6th Destination: Minesview Park

@ Minesview Park. I love this place :)

Sa wakas! nakarating din sa Minesview :)) Buti na lang at tumigil ang ulan so we had a chance to enjoy roaming around Minesview. We took a picture with a cute, large dog. We wore Igorot costumes, etc. Super enjoy!

7th Destination: Wright Park

From Minesview Park, maniniwala ba kayong nilakad namin papuntang Wright Park just to do horseback-riding? :)) Energetic talaga itong mga kasama ko, GO na GO kahit saan. LOL

Anyway, it's my first time to ride a horse. As usual, takot nanaman ako. Paano ba naman kasi, kabilin-bilinan sa akin ng Mama and Papa ko noong bata pa ako, 'wag na 'wag daw ako sasakay ng horse kasi may kakilala sila na namatayan ng anak na sumakay doon. Oh well, pinalaki nila akong duwag (joke!). 

At last! Nakasakay ako ng horse that time, and guess what? Nakauwi naman ako ng buhay sa amin :)
